PANCHAGAVYAM.

PANCHAGAVYAM>The most revered abhisheka dravyam for all GODS Abhisheka requirements list THE KING OF DRAVYAMS - METHOD AND MIXING PROCEDURES According to Dharmasaasthra, it has been clearly codified the >percentage to be applied while mixing each ingredient to make Panchagavyam. > It is measured as "Phalam". 'One Phalam' is equivalent to approximately >3 (silver) one rupee coin weight. The power of panchakavya medicine should >be accompanied by power of Mantra. In olden days temples will have >separate dedicated place to make/mix panchakavya dravyam. We see >inscriptions from sculptors that many Kings had gifted hordes of cows to >various temples specially to make panchagavyam. These sculptors proudly >refer the cows as "ever-living cows". > CELESTIAL IMPORTANCE OF COW>> Cow has been given an exalted position in Hinduism. Our >predecessors have intelligently given us the treasure of respecting this >holy animal which was used by humans for thousands of years from time >immemorial - both for agriculture and economic achievements.>> In the "Rig Veda", there is one whole section devoted to the >cow. It is called "Gosooktham". There are known family elders who would >never take their daily food until they have recited this "Gosooktham" and >performed "Go pooja".>> "Grahapravesham" or house warming is not complete without the >presence of the cow and the calf for the puja. It is considered very >auspicious if perchance the cow gushes its dung in the precincts of the new >house. The Gomuthram, Gomiyum and the Panchagavyam are considered most >sacred in the rituals as also for treatment of certain ailments in the past >centuries. It is being rediscovered in many regions of our country today. >Not only during sacred occasions like the Gruhapravesam, but also during >the obsequies rituals performed by the Hindus, cow is gifted away in >"Go-Dhanam" to a sacred being. This is considered equal to giving as gift, >the Gods of the entire 14 lokas, that the religion believes exist>> Though certain traditions have been found fast disappearing, >one can still see the Hindu offer his pranams to the rear of the cow, where >Mahalakshmi dwells and offers "Pradakshina" i.e. circumnavigates the cow in >reverence. For this is equal to the "pradakshina" of all the "mukkoti >devas" of the "14 Lokas" that the Hindus believe. As the above sloka >confirms, the Gods of the 14 Lokas reside in the body of the cow.>> Gavam Angeshu Thishtanthi Bhuvanaya Chaturdasaha" It is >recorded in our "Puranas" like the "Matsya Kavyam" and "Mahabharata", that >the Gods were immensely pleased with the birth of such a celestial animal >that each one of them occupied a part of the cow. When it was the turn of >Goddess Mahalakshmi, there was no place for her to occupy. She found place >in the rear of the cow, which she gleefully occupied. Thus giving sanctity >to the rear of the cow.>> Go-Muthra and Gomiyum>> Hindus believe that the very animal was rendered to this world >as Kamadhenu. The celestial being. The holy animal that came out along with >the Amrutham, the nectar, when the Devas and the Asuras churned the Meru >Parvatham, using Serpent King Vasuki as the tool. Having come out to the >Bhooloka along with the Amrutham or Nectar during the churning, she >occupies a significant place in Hinduism, thus rituals are added with a >holy touch.>> SIGNIFICANCE OF PANCHAGAVYAM>> There are various Dravyams considered auspicious and vividly >described as most suitable, however, there is no Dravyam like PANCHAGAVYAM >which is held high and accorded a special status - this is called "King of >Abhisheka Dravyam". As the spark of fire destroys woods, Panchagavyam has >the effect to burn away human sins.>> Pancha-kavyam is derived from five different cows with five >different substances. For example, (1) cow urine from black cow, (2) cow >dung from white cow, (3) copper colored cow milk, (4) blood colored curd, >(5) 'kapila' colored cow ghee. According to Dharmasaastra, if all these >cows are not available, then all the ingredients mentioned herein can be >procured from 'kapila' colored cow.>> Panchagavyam is GOD's first preferred and primary Dravya >abhishekam. These five holy ingredients have one each Athi Devatha.>> Milk : Chandran> Curd (Yogurth) : Vaayu> Ghee : Suryan> Cow Urine :Varunan> Cow Dung : Agni
> Therefore, it gains importance while Abhishekam is performed >above the Lord's matted locks.>> Suryan, Chandran Vaayu, Varunan, Agni - all these celestials >bless through Panchagavyam, they bestow unlimited wealth, happiness and >everlasting peace, hence, considered most coveted treasure of mankind.>> We have seen earlier - panchagavyam is given top-most >importance amidst all other Abhisheka Dravyams in Shiva Puja. During >Shivarathri - out of four kaala puja, first kaala puja is done with >Panchagavyam. Special status accorded in both Shaivam and Vaishnavam. >Vishnu is Adhidevatha for Ghee.>> Generally pure milk abhishekam gives good health and >off-springs; cow related curd abhishekam provides progeny; ghee derived >from cow bestows Moksha; cow-urine removes sin - all these substances put >together "panchagavyam" gives combined benefits of all ingredients >mentioned above.>> Consumption of "Panchakavya abhisheka theertham" certainly >destroys at once all unknown diseases, knowingly committed sins, mitigate >sufferings from poverty. It also has high quality of medicinal values, its >divine, these medicinal values have been enumerated through hymns by >scholars and Rishis. Humour and Laughter.

Laughter arising out of Humour is one of the greatest gifts that God has given to men. One should remember that human beings are the only creatures who could laugh and who have a sense of humour. Humour and laughter keep us always happy and healthy . Laughter magnetises all of us and we then attract people of the same poles or even the opposite poles. Have we forgotten what we have learned in our primary classes that "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"?.It is the playful effect of humour and laughter that makes Jack not only a bright boy , but also a healthy boy. Bringing to the forefront the therapeutic effect of laughter, there is one more saying which runs as follows:-"A belly laughter a day, keeps the doctor away". Laughter takes away one's tension. Laughter increases resistence power of one. Humour has a healing effect too. It is said that when one laughs he uses 14 muscles of his body, where as, when he grins and frowns he uses 72 muscles.

Think for a moment the world famous cartoonist Mr.R.K.Laxman, and his cartoons daily appearing in the fromt page of The Times of India news paper. The Managing Editor of TOI News Paper is not foolish to print a cartoon in the front page of a News paper of good standing in India. There are good reasons behind it. Many will be waiting eagerly , early in the morning daily, for the paper to have a look, first at the cartoon and the Common man, and then other news items. Carricatures deflate the egos of politicians and the rulers . Their follies are exaggerated in the cartoons and their shortcomings are pointed out in a humorous manner.
Incidentally, one more anecdote worth narrating here on humour is that, years back when poet Kannadasan and a few of his colleagues went to meet President Radhakrishnan, they were late by a few minutes. They were very anxious and worried, and had in mind a fear as to how the President would receive them. When the President saw them and sensed their anxiety, he spontaneously sang a few humourous lines from a song from the film "THOOKU THOOKI" and made them feel at ease with the following words, "Welcome, welcome my friends. Have you come here to meet the school prefect?. These lines evoked silent laughter or smile as it is called, from Kannadasan and his group, and they got rid of their anxiety. All came back to their normal mood and since they were relaxed, they could finish quickly the work for which they had come to meet the President.

It will be worthwhile to reproduce a simple song from Kannadasan composed by him mainly to reduce tension and maintain one's equilibrium.
We cry when we were born
We cry when one dies
We have forgotten to laugh even once
During our life time, to get rid of
Our anxieties and worries
.
In simple words Kannadasan has placed before us indirectly, the use Humour and laughter in our life.

It will be a great tribute to N.S.Krishnan and T.A.Mathuram of yesteryears in films if we remember them, who made us laugh, laugh and laugh till our stomach started aching, through their humourous acting.
.
Laughter is an excellant tool for improving family as well as social relationship.
Laughter and humour can protect one from abrasive words which can wound one. As a live example, when somebody said "You,son of a bitch, why did you......,the reply was "Sorry, brother.....
Laughter improves the will to live.
Laughter increases longevity.
At the workspot, laughter brings the worker and the superviser together.
Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.
It is said that the influence of drink, and liquor open up people, but they are costly. Laughter is cheaper and healthier.
Laughter cures emotional stress.
By telling jokes and laughing at one's own follies and faults, one improves his self confidence, self esteem and creates a rapport.
In brief, humour and laughter have powerful healing power and these are great assets that God has given to man to face problems of the world in a practical manner and restore health to him, his family, his organisation where he works and last but not the least ,community at large. Don't copy if you cannot paste.

DON'T COPY IF YOU CAN'T PASTE

Not too long ago, a large seminar was held for ministers and reverends in training. Among the facilitators were many well-known motivational speakers.

One such speaker boldly approached the pulpit and, gathering the entire crowd's attention, said, "The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who wasn't my wife!"
The crowd was shocked!

He followed up by saying, "That woman was my mother!" The crowd burst into laughter and he gave his speech, which was well received.

About a week later, one of the ministers who had attended the seminar decided to use that joke in his sermon. As he shyly approached the pulpit one sunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse the joke in his head. It was a bit foggy to him. Getting to the microphone he said loudly, "The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who was not my wife!"

His congregation sat shocked, murmuring. After standing there for almost 10 seconds trying to recall the second half of the joke, the pastor finally blurted out "...and I can't remember who she was!"

Moral of the story: Don't copy if you can't paste.

INFOSYS NARAYANAMURTHY ON JRD

It was a wintry evening in 1979, when I took a taxi from my Nariman Point office to pick up Sudha, from her office at Bombay House, on my way home. I had been delayed in the office. It was completely dark and I was worried that she would be alone on a deserted road.

As the taxi ground to a halt, I saw a tall, old gentleman talking to
Sudha.

When I got out of the taxi, I met JRD for the first time. His words,
which I remember even today, were a gentle admonishment that I
should not make my young wife wait in the dark. I believe he saw her waiting alone outside Bombay House when he was leaving the office, and decided to wait with her till I picked her up.

I was stunned by this gesture from India's biggest industrialist to a young and lowly executive in his company. Most great people are remembered

for their small acts of courtesy. This is what makes them great. To them, these are natural rather than put-on.

A few years ago, my daughter, studying in the US, wanted to profile an industrialist as part of her course on Leadership. I suggested she profile Ratan Tata. Sudha and I took her to meet Ratan. The perfect gentleman that he is, Ratan gave her two hours as against the scheduled half an hour.

During this talk, we asked if ever he saw JRD abandon his principles, even slightly.

Ratan was unequivocal. He said the old man always came on the right side of every issue no matter how tough the choices. That, to me, is JRD - a man who had simple values and stuck to them every time. We, at Infosys, have been unabashed admirers of what he stood for.

Criticisms.

Brick-bats and Bouquets: Very often we receive from persons known to us as well as from persons not known to us, encomiums, complimentary words and at times nasty remarks for our actions and also for the work we have done. These words- good and bad -are two sides of the same coin. Good words received by us, we forget soon , but nasty remarks remain indelible in our mind for quite some time. These good and bad words we receive, are because of our touch with people in every walk of life. In our practical life, such meetings cannot be avoided. Because, it is only through such man-to-man contacts and our mixing freely with people in general, that one can form an estimate of himself and his capacity. However a word of caution here is that, there are people readier in this world to take measure of the capacity of others than of themselves. One has to be careful in dealing with such people. Coming back to criticisms and remarks -good and bad, and complimentary words, they have all to be taken in the right spirit, and in the right manner, with the sole object of correcting ourselves if they are bad, and improving further, if they are not derogatory. He who shuns criticisms and thinks himself as though he is too wise to learn from others, will never thrive in life and never succeed in doing anything ,either good or great. With such a thinking in him, he is apt to become conceited, puffed-up, claiming too much and arrogant too. And he will remain ignorant of himself. One should not fall in this trap. Whenever we hear of criticisms on something we have done , we have to keep our mind expanded and spreadout, and our heart wide open,so that we try to give a thought to it and learn more of the good side coming out of the criticism.. There is no question of feeling ashamed when receiving criticisms and learning things from them. There is no age bar for learning. If necessary one can take the help of those who are wiser and more experienced than himself for learning. When we give thought to the criticisms we hear, and learn to interpret and explain their meaning and their necessity, which come under our observation during the course of our daily life, we educate ourselves and learn to judge and solve things correctly. Employee Rules and Regulations-2005 (New)

Subject: Employee Rules & Regulations - 2005 (New)

D ress Code

It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your
salary.
If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we
assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a
raise.
If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better,
so that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore do not need a raise.
If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be and
therefore do not need a raise.

Sick Days
We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof of sickness.
If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

Personal Days
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called
Saturday and Sunday.

Toilet Use
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet. There is now a
strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of the three
minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall
door will open and a picture will be taken.
After your second offence, your picture will be posted on the company
bulletin board under the "Chronic Offenders category". Anyone caught smiling in the picture will be sectioned under the company's mental health policy !
You are allowed to use the rest room only thrice a day and you have to swipe in and out from the toilet doors also.

Lunch Break
Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch as they need to eat more, so
that they can look healthy.
Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.

Fat people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time
needed to drink a slim fast.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company.

We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore,
all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations,
aggravations,insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations,
consternation and input should be directed elsewhere.

Navagrahas

THE NAVAGRAHAS

PARUR S.GANESAN

The belief on the influence of planets on human affairs is age old. The famous statement of Calpurnia, wife of Julius Ceasar, “ When beggars die, there are no comets seen”, establishes the fact such a belief did exist in ancient Rome, three hundred years before the birth of Christ. The sighting of a star at Bethlehem by the three wise men of the East, heralded the arrival of Jesus. Hindu mythology is rich with several spicy anecdotes on planetary effects over human beings. Ramayana contains a very interesting story linked with the birth of Indrajit, son of Ravana, the mighty Emperor of Lanka, who had subjugated all the deities including the planets. Having full control over the planets, Ravana, in consultation with his palace astrologers had positioned each of the planet in such a way that the boy born at that moment will be invincible. But at the exact moment of the birth , Saturn played a mischief , making the entire calculation go hey wire and consequently, Indrajit met with premature death.

A distinguishing feature of the planetary position is that it keeps changing every second. All the planets revolve around the Sun ,the mightiest of the planets. While Earth, even rotating on its own axle all the time, takes one year to circumvent the Sun , Moon which is the fastest planet circumvents the earth in 27 days and 8 hours. All the other planets revolve around the Sun’s orbit. The Mars does it in 684 days, Mercury takes 88 days, Jupiter 154 days and Venus 225 days . Saturn which is the slowest takes 19 ½ years to complete one circumvention of the orbit. Both Rahu and Kethu the last two planets, travel in the opposite direction.. With different speeds in circumventing the Sun, which itself is on the move all the time, there is nothing like a fixed planetary situation and it is a second to second combination with the attendant consequences- good or bad. Little wonder that even twins born in split seconds often face different experiences in life.

It is amazing that over the centuries this belief in the power of the planets, stars and zodiacs has not witnessed any erosion. On the other hand , not withstanding rationalists and atheists , faith and dependence on them has only increased.

It is in this background that the nine temples in the Cauveri belt within a radius of 100 kms around Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu (covering Kumbakonam and Myladuthurai )dedicated to each of the nine planets assume significance.. In line with the ancient belief that the planets are lesser deities and do not merit an independent status, all the nine temples are annexed to a Shiva temple, with the presiding deity of each temple bearing a different synonym .Attached to the abode of every planet are also a few holy tanks with water of curative powers proved down the centuries.

These temples are indeed unique as no such conglomeration of the temples dedicated to the planets exist anywhere in India or perhaps in the whole world. These are the immortal contribution of the Chola dynasty which ruled the undivided Tanjore State from 8th to 12th century A.D. It is believed that the very positioning of the temples dedicated to the planets in the various strategic locations has been done with such astronomical calculations and precision that the combined effect would ensure peace, prosperity and all round progress of this fertile riparian land in the Cauveri route for centuries to come. Experience bears testimony to this belief.

This delta has an unparalleled history of cultural and spiritual excellence, not to speak of its material richness. It has produced great saints like Appar, Sundarar, Thirugnana Sambandhar, Manikyavachakar and the 12 Alwars, the immortal Trinity in music- Thiagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshithar and Shyama Sastri, and several literary luminaries and poets par excellence . Driven by ecstasy, great devotees like Appothi Adigal, Sekkizhar, Arunagiri and many others have composed and sung several hymns in praise of the planets . Pregnant with meaning and piety these hymns have assumed eternal value over the years elevating the spiritual level of the community.

What is generally known as Sthalapurana, each of the temple carries with it a legend of its origin with supportive and descriptive miracles. Also, the stories on the genesis of each planet cover a wide range - from incurable disease to adultery and deceit to which even deities became susceptible like mortals. Of the nine planets, seven represent the seven days of the week , while Rahu and Kethu have only a secondary ranking- often referred to by astrologers as “Neecha”or “paapa” grahas .They have their presence for a select duration of 1 ½ hours known as Rahukalam and Gulika kalam every day with a total weekly presence of 10 ½ hours each . These are considered as the very inauspicious periods of the day . Since Sun occupies the prime position, the week starts with Him followed by the other six planets .

Markandaya Purana describes that when the world was first created, the sound “OM” resonated the whole earth and the bright Sun appeared. (“Let there be light”: Bible.) He bestows on his devotees fame, good health, governing capacity and popularity. While recitation of Gayathree is associated with Sun, ”Aditya Hrudayam” is another popular Mantra recited by devotees, as Sri Ram overcame his obstacles for his final onslaught of Ravana with this Mantra administered to him by Rishi Agasthya. Accompanied by his consorts Samjna and Chhaya, the idol of Sun (Surya)on Suryanar temple faces the West and outside the sanctum sanctorum all the other planets stand in attention, disarmed .

The temple of the Moon(Chandra) is located at Thingaloor . Moon came to being during the churning of the Ocean of Milk along with other celestials like Kamadhenu, Airawatha, and Goddess Lakshmy .Reportedly a manifestation from the heart of Vishnu, the Purusha Sooktha describes his origin as “Chandrama manaso jaathah” Drawing light from the Sun, basically Moon is benevolent, soft and fair.” Legend has it that Thirunavakarasar the great saint restored life to a boy who died of snake bite by singing the famous hymn ”Ondru Kolam” before the deity in this temple. Even to this date thereafter there has been no death of snake bite in this area..

Mars (Angaraka) is at Vaitheeswarankovil close to Mayilanduthurai. The birth of Angaraka also referred to as Kuja or Mangal is traced to a drop of sweat which fell from the forehead of Lord Shiva during one of his moments of trance.Kuja is a very large hearted, warm planet with a positive disposition and quick response to prayers. Since his origin is traced to Shiva, he is considered the elder brother of Ganesha and Karthikeya.. The Lord Shiva (Vaitheeswaran) in this temple is a Divine Healer for chronic ailments.

A progeny of Moon through Thara, wife of his preceptor Brihaspathi under questionable circumstances, Budha(Mercury) is an acknowledged scholar and the planet of learning. Accompanied by his consort meaningfully christened as Brahmavidyaambika (Goddess of wisdom).this planet is located at Thiruvengadu near Mayiladuthurai. Airawatha the illustrious white elephant offered him worship here and so the place is also known as Swetharanya. This place is also revered as Adi Chidambaram, because Lord Nataraja performed His first dance rehearsal called Chandrachoodamani in this spot before the august assembly of the great nine sages, long before He performed in Chidambaram.

The temple of Jupiter (Guru) is located in Alangudi, a small hamlet , about 20 kms south of Kumbakonam. The temple for Lord Shiva here is to commemorate and thank Him for His timely help to the Devas by drinking the poison vomited by Vasuki during the churning of the Ocean. (In Tamil, Alam means poison and Kudi (gudi) means drink.) The idol of Gurumurthy, strangely enough faces the South and so is also known as Dakshinamurthy.. Transition of Guru from one zodiac to another marks beneficial effects like success in marriage, employment and so on. Like Thingalur this village is also immune to snake poison. Another very interesting aspect of Guru is that every Navagraha temple houses a niche for Dakshinamoorthy (also known as Brihaspathi) on the southern corridor facing South! He is the only one planet worshipped by Devas as he is their Guru. Among the nine planets Guru is considered the prime benevolent one.

Kanjanoor where the planet Venus (Shukra) is present is on the banks of river Cauveri.Shukra is the preceptor of Asuras and is a master of state craft and diplomacy credited with a publication known as Shukraneethi. He is one eyed and exclusively possesses a special power to bring the dead back to life.Apart from bestowing health and happiness, Shukra’s blessings are always sought for wealth and prosperity. Unlike other planets, there is no separate sanctum for Shukra in Kanjanoor and the planet is deemed merged within the idol of Shiva bearing the appellation Agnipureswarar.

Saturn (Shani), one of the most troublesome planets has a temple in Tirunallar, in Pondicherry state. An offspring of Sun and Chhaya, Shani is the most dreaded of all planets often compared to Satan of Holy Bible and Koran . Hindu mythology is filled with horror stories of how Shani could reduce Emperors from riches to rags and the trauma experienced by them- loss of kingdom, separation from wife and children, loss of complexion and even identity - particularly during the notorious 7 ½ years of his presence in the individual’s zodiac, every 30 years. The pathetic stories of Nala and Damayanthi, King Harischandra are all linked with this planet. The temple derives its name from Nala who came out of his turbulent Saturn period by worshipping him and taking a dip in a nearby sacred pond here. Unfortunately his aspects of magnificence are eclipsed by sheer bias. In the normal life span of a person, the Saturn period of 7 ½ years happens thrice- while in the first one the person undergoes miseries, the second one takes him high to comforts and if he lives for a third one he achieves heights of glory and happiness. In fact there is an adage which says :

“No one gives as much as Shani

and no one causes ruins as much as Shani”

Supposedly with a lame foot, Shani moves very slowly and it takes 2 ½ years for his transition from one Zodiac to another. On this significant day lakhs of pilgrims gather at Tirunallar temple seeking his blessings.

Rahu and Kethu are only shadow planets, making their presence felt everyday for 1 ½ hours - considered inauspicious. Rahu has the head of a man but the body of a serpent, while Kethu has the head of a serpent and the body of a human being. Their origin is traced to a deceit played by one demon (Asura) who managed to consume the nectar stealthily by faking himself as a deva and so became immortal. Sun and Moon who discovered the fake reported it to Vishnu who beheaded him. However, as the demon had already consumed nectar he would not die and Vishnu to his astonishment found life in the severed body . He then fixed the head to a dead serpent lying nearby who became Rahu; his torso was then attached to the head of the serpent who became Kethu.. The former is located at Thirunageswaram in the heart of Kumbakonam. Rahu gets pleased with worship during the Rahukalam and devotees throng in the temple during this short period (otherwise considered inauspicious), every day. The temple of Kethu, the other shadow planet is at Keezhaperumpallam which is hardly three kms from the temple of Budha.
